Maryland Board of Elections: Bar Insurrectionists from the Ballot

On January 6, 2021, former President Donald Trump incited hundreds of violent insurrectionists to storm the Capitol in an effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Allies in Congress and other elected offices across the country were involved in supporting the insurrection. Five people died and more than 140 officers were injured in a seditious attack that shook our democracy to its core.

State Delegate Dan Cox participated in trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election and needs to be investigated as to whether he supported the insurrection. Delegate Cox reportedly chartered buses that transported rioters to the Capitol on January 6th. He attended the pre-insurrection rally and tweeted during the occupation of the Capitol - “Pence is a traitor.”

Now, Trump is preparing to run for president again in 2024, while Cox seeks to become Maryland’s governor in November

But the mandate of the United States Constitution must be followed. Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, also known as the Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause, bars from public office any individual who has taken an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and then engages in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or gives aid or comfort to those who have. State Delegate Dan Cox must be investigated for his potential involvement in the violent attack on Congress and whether he is disqualified from holding any future public office under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

Applying the rule of law requires us to hold our elected officials accountable to the Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause. Maryland Board of Elections Administrator Linda Lamone has a responsibility to investigate whether Cox is disqualified under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment from any future ballot.

Sign if you agree: Linda Lamone must abide by Section 3 of the 14th Amendment and investigate whether State Delegate Dan Cox is barred from appearing on any future ballot under the Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause.
